My Love: My Rings

I never really post many fashion/pics of myself but I have to post these: my rings. I am a hardcore fan of all things silver and marcasite. I have 5 rings total: two on my left and 3 on my right. I brought them at thrift shops, and second hand stores. The black thumb ring is actually from H&M and its plastic! I love it nonetheless.

I'm No Longer A Fraud

Last night, I had the pleasure of hearing a word that rocked me to my core. It was by Jesse Peterson, my pastor at Village Vespers (associate pastor at Neighborhood Church of Greenwich Village). I can't even put into words how it spoke to me. In the business that I work in (fashion) it is soooo easy to try to be someone else, to fit the ideas that people want to have of you or to even fit the mold for the job that you do. That was my main problem when I first started working in fashion: trying to be someone I was not. I can't even begin to imagine how much it grieved God that I was not happy with the person He made me to be and that I was trying to be someone else. It was like me telling God that He made a mistake when He created me this way. My new job has allowed me to be more like myself. I'm surrounded by people who love their job and love self-expression (did I mention that I work at my dream label?). I have to say that the one thing about realizing you're a fraud when you're a Christian is knowing that there is Someone that take over and handle it for you. I could say I don't know where I would be if I wasn't in the Lord, but that's not true: I would be dead, literally. But now I have someone who takes on my burdens, stress, pain, etc. and gives me strength, patience, love, peace, joy, etc. And believe me, in this business I need it. So, now that I'm no longer a fraud I have the freedom and the joy that comes with discovering who God intended me to be: and that's awesome. Be blessed.

Scarf Inspiration - How to Tie a Scarf

I have started getting into scarves.  They add that touch of color, and really complete an outfit.  I loved the way scarves look on other people, but when I got my first scarf I was at a bit of a loss.  How do I wear it?

There are lots of ways to tie a scarf.  Depends on the outfit and the scarf.  But here are some inspirations if you're a scarf newbie like me.  Or maybe just need some new looks.

Classic or Boring?

I'm not a trendy dresser.  Most of the items that comprise my wardrobe are some versions of pieces that have been wardrobe staples for as long as I can remember.  Sometimes I'm in style, sometimes I'm not.  I consider my style as 'classic'.  But the word 'boring' has come up in reference to my wardrobe.

We all have our sweats, suits, black dresses, and jeans.  But in addition to those, I can't live without some version of:

The Polo.  Feels like a t-shirt but the collar makes it a little more polished.

The Khakis.  I find them more comfy and versatile than jeans.

The V-Neck Sweater.  More flattering than the crew neck, and can be dressed up or dressed down.  Great for layering.

The Leather Shoulder Bag.  Either black or brown.  Goes with everything.  Comfy.

 

The Fleece Jacket.  Can be layered with heavy duty outerwear for maximum insulation, but still cute enough for a trip to the mall.

The Birkenstocks.  These make my feet happy.

Argyle.  From socks to sweaters, I heart argyle.

The Pearl Studs.  Go with almost every piece of jewelry I own.

 The Cute Summer Skirt.  Summer is for skirts.  They're so cute and girly and comfy.  Can't ask for anything more.

The Beaded Necklace.  I learned to wire wrap and now I make my own.  I love these in all different colors and patterns.

I've Been Busy These Days....

Sorry for the neglect. Where do I begin? I'm still sticking to my no-dating for a year. I've been looking into design classes and realize I have a love for event planning that I didn't think I would have. I am working with the girls on dances for the upcoming Youth Convention; that translates to exhausted! I've changed my hair colour yet again, lol. Remember the highlights I mentioned? Yeah. It's copper. I like it, at first I thought that it was too much but now its growing on me. I'm entering the Brides Magazine Operation Dress 2010 contest. We have to enter a dress design that will grace the cover and David's Bridal will make......did I also mention you win $10,000 dollars?! The song from Annie "Easy Street" just popped into my head, lol. I actually feel like watching it right now. What else did I forget to mention? I have a new phone: HTC Touch Pro 2. It's alright. That's it. Just alright. I will talk to you later.

It's Been Too Long...

Where do I start? Well, I can start at apologizing for not posting these past 2 weeks. My job blocked blogger so I will be posting via cell phone again for a while. So that being said, let me update you:


My hair: I dyed it an espresso brown colour and I like it so far. My beautician is talking about highlights but I keep avoiding the subject.

Work: Same thing, different day. I am grateful that I have a job and God has continued to make a way for me.

-Dance: I'm so busy looking into programs for dance and listening to songs and praying to find out what direction the Lord wants me to move with this Ministry. I'm not going to lie, I'm nervous; I want to touch people and move them when we minister in dance not just do some pretty movements to music. I don't know, maybe its just me. I feel like I'm in a stage where God is showing me where I am and where I need to be to do great works in His name; and I am seriously coming up short.

School: I am interested in attending Parsons for a Certificate in Fashion Design and then go to F.I.T. for Merchandising. I love fashion, and love to design. I feel its time to work on my craft.

Relationships: Still the same. I managed to keep up with my guidelines I told you about earlier. So you can imagine how rarely my phone rings or when I receive text messages. I know its not in vain so I won't stress it. It's for a purpose....also update about waiting: I will be honest about that; It sucks! It boils down to this I rather be waiting and miserable than in a relationship that I have no business in and have to deal with the consequences.

Other things: Right now I'm getting (slowly) use to the idea of it being all girls in the house (my mother, sister and I). The reason why: I do all the dirty work (killing bugs, throwing out the trash, draining the sink, etc). I don't like it one bit, lol. Saturday night we had our College Fund Concert and Singspiration. I can truly say it was a blessing as well as a success. We had a packed house and the children sang their hearts out. I have also made a resolution to start dressing my age. I have realized that my closet resembles the closets of middle age mothers. I am no where near middle age and I have no children so that's not a good look. I have filled out into a size 6 ( I love the hourglass pin-up look) and I have been hiding my curves. But no more! I will embrace my curves, love my figure and dress like a 25 year old woman.

Shoe of the Moment - Sofft Candra

I've been sporting these mary janes lately.  They go with pants and skirts.  And now that the weather is nicer, I am enjoying a break from boots, and shoes that cover more of the foot.

I love love love love love Sofft shoes.  They are super comfortable.  No rubbing or foot pain even after a full day.  The cushioning on the insole makes you feel like you're walking on a cloud.  I also love the lower heels for work.  Some of their styles are a bit 'grandma', but some are super cute.  Definitely worth checking out if you like heels and still want to feel your feet by the end of the day.  They're definitely called 'Sofft' for a reason.

And the best part?  I picked up these babies for around $30 at Nordstrom Rack!  Sweet!

2010 Oscar Red Carpet Fashion

I love the Oscars. Not because of who wins (I rarely agree with their choices ever since Joaquin Phoenix lost for his role in Gladiator.....long story) but because of the red carpet. Its the time when they pull out the good stuff or they make want to throw them back into the closet. So, without further ado....my list:

The Women:

1. Sandra Bullock in Marchesa- I have to say she looked absolutely stunning. I hope that she doesn't go the route of Tom Hanks and other comedians ahead of her after her Oscar win. I hope she still continues to do comedies as well as dramas.

2. Carey Mulligan in Prada- I feel she has some hits and misses but this dress is definitely a hit. Her cute crop and the cut of the dress makes her look amazing.

3. Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham- Finally! She isn't trying too hard and she looks amazing. The dress is sexy without being too much and its still classy. Keep it up Ms. Cyrus.

4. Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel Haute Couture- I love this look on Sarah Jessica. It looks very Carrie. She still has it.

5. Sigourney Weaver in Lanvin- Sigourney looks amazing! The dress looks like it was made for her. The colour, the cut, it all compliments her and makes her stand out in the crowd.

6. Diane Kruger in Chanel Haute Couture- Diane never ceases to amaze me. She is a fashion dare devil and it always pays off for her. She looked stunning and she didn't have to put much effort into it.

7. Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Haute Couture- Rachel is a true beauty. She looked elegant in her dress that seemed to just match her refined look. She wasn't over done or demanding attention but she stood out anyway.

8. Nicole Richie in Reem Acra- Can I say this was on of my favorite dresses of the night? Nicole looked beautiful and elegant; and yet it looked like a little rocker was blended in: rocker couture, lol.

9. Zoe Saldana in Givenchy- This was a VERY, VERY daring choice but I liked it on her. She put it on and wore it like she owned it; and that takes guts. It was a little too out there for my tastes but she did her thing and did it well.

10. Demi Moore in Atelier Versace- Versace seems to be a staple at the Oscars. Someone always shows up in Versace and this year was no different. Demi looked amazing, she didn't look like she was trying to be young and she didn't look old either. She showed she clearly still has it. 40 is definitely the new 20 in her case. The colour made her glow, and she looked like a goddess.

11. Cameron Diaz in Oscar de la Renta- Cameron never seems to disappoint me, she always wears the dress that only she can make look amazing. The dress, her hair and make-up makes her look surreal. She is so stunning and the dress is in a league of its own.

12. Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan- Penelope will probably always make my list. She is stunning, has curves and always wears gowns that just make you want to stop and stare. She looks beautiful and the cut as well as the colour flatters her.

13. Kristen Stewart in Monique L'Huillier- Stop the presses! Kristen looks amazing! She actually looked like she put in some effort into what she was goign to wear and how she would look. The dress was an awesome choice; the fit and cut made her look like she has curves and the colour still allows her to look gothic (lol).

14. Amanda Seyfried in Armani Prive- This was actually a daring dress for her complexion and age. She managed to pull it off effortlessly. Jennifer Lopez also wore a similar dress from the same collection (I won't comment on that)  but I liked Amanda's better. The dress is cut in a way that you have to have the right amount of curves to pull it off; too much will draw attention to the dress, and the curves in a bad way. That being said, the dress just worked for Amanda and she worked for the dress.

Now Onto the Men.......

1. Tom Ford in Tom Ford-.....Sigh.....where do I begin with him? He looks amzing, the suit looks like it was something he was born with it on; I could go on and on but Tom Ford knows his suits and he knows he looks good in them too.

2. Zac Efron in Calvin Klein Collection- Zac is quickly moving up the "It List" of the men to dress. He has the look, the body and the potential. He looks good, real good (lol).

3. Jake Gyllenhall in Burberry- I have a thing for rugged men in a nice cut suit and Jake fits the bill. The suit fits him just right, I also love the white pocket square. Not too shabby.

4. Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin in Tom Ford- I love these guys. They are absolutely hilarious! I love 30 Rock and of course I love Steve Martin. They also looked very distinguished in their Tom Ford attire.

5. Ryan Reynolds in Tom Ford- Tom Ford seems to be the go to guy in suits this award season. Ryan Reynolds looks great in any suit and Tom Ford is no exceptional. He looks.....let me behave myself, lol. Let's just say Scarlett is a lucky lady.

NYFW- Take 4

Oscar de la Renta F/W 2010: I don't really remember when I fell in love with Oscar de la Renta; but I can tell you it was love at first sight and I've been in love everyday since. This man is literally a genius when it comes to design. He makes garments that compliment the woman and makes her the center of attention and not the garment. I love his spanish style to the garment (ruffles, tiers, etc) and his way of making it look refined and ladylike.....Now that I am done drooling over the man, lets move on to his Fall 2010 line. The Fall 2010 line was elegant and refined; fit for a certain first lady.....the pieces I feel catered to both his older client and his new younger clients. Its overall theme: anyone can look like a lady. His use of rich colours and fabrics make my hand itch to be able to touch the garments....I need to study under him! My must have piece: The orange taffeta slim dress.

Marchesa F/W 2010: .....Where do I begin with them? The design duo (Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig) are awesome. One went to school for costume design (Chapman) and the other went for textiles (Craig). And in 2004, Marchesa was created. What I like about this line is the fact that every piece looks like art. The texture, fabric choice, draping, etc. makes each garment look as if they're telling you a story. For Fall 2010, they totally blew my mind. In the midst of cocktail dresses and full length gowns that were a mix of off whites, pale blues as well as bright pinks, reds and blues were a few amazingly tailored tuxedo jackets. This label is not for the wall flowers. My must have piece: the gold long gown with the sheer/beaded front. Amazing!

J. Mendel F/W 2010: I discovered J. Mendel in 2005 at the MET Costume Ball. Liya Kebede (My All-Time Favorite Model) was wearing this gold tulle empire waist dress that had me drooling....I was hooked from that day on. Moving to modern day J. Mendel; Fall 2010 is young and hip with the abundance of cocktail dresses but he remains true to his old school elegant with the furs, leathers and full length gowns. His cocktail dresses are bound to catch the eye of many starlets and I won't be surprised when his gowns end on on red carpets during awards season. His colour scheme was reds, blacks, deep beautiful blue- greens and classy furs. My must have piece of this collection: The deep bluish-green semi gathered strapless gown.
