Bicycles - How Do I Choose?

Now that spring is here, we once again can enjoy the outdoors.  And there's nothing like feeling the wind in your face on a bike.  I have had a bike for as long as I can remember, and have been mountain biking for almost 15 years.  I also enjoy road biking, touring and even indoor spinning.  Since I built my own mountain bike about 5 years ago, I have been the resident bike expert to all of my friends, and all of their friends...  Since I got 3 "help me pick out a bike" emails this week, I figured it may be helpful to write a guide on how to choose the right bike.

THE BEACH CRUISER
The cruiser will not get you anywhere fast, but it will get you there in style.  Case in point, check out this beauty from the Target Liberty of London collection.  Keep in mind that the beach cruiser often only has one speed (though some have three), and your body is not positioned for optimum pedaling, so you won't be getting there in a hurry.  This bike is perfect if you want to get out there and enjoy the weather and the scenery, and to...well...just cruise!

THE MOUNTAIN BIKE
No matter how many different bikes I own and ride, the mountain bike will always be closest to my heat.  It is my first love.  If you are interested in trail riding, invest in a good mountain bike.  Bikes take quite a beating on the trails, so in this category, more than any other, you get what you paid for.  Think of it this way, if your bike can't take the beating, your body will!  In the 10+ years Ive been mountain biking, I've seen countless couples where the dude is on a $3K bike and having the time of his life cruising through the trails, while the girl is on a $100 POS that weighs 50lbs, doesn't fit her properly, and handles like a tank  Surprise - she looks totally miserable.  Check out Giant Bicycles -  a mass manufacturer that makes bikes for many of the popular bike brands, so it can offer quality at a lower price.  Choose a better quality hard tail (suspension only in the front) over a bottom of the line full suspension.  Make sure you test ride, and get your bike shop to swap out the saddle (to fit your sit bones), handlebars (risers will bring the handlebars up for comfort), pedals (if you want to go clipless), and tires (appropriate for your local terrain), as needed.

THE ROAD BIKE
If you are looking to biking as a way of getting in shape, then look no further than a road bike.  The advantages of road biking is that you can start right out of your font door, and get a smooth fast ride that gets your ticker going.  Make sure you get a proper fit form someone who knows what they're doing.  You will be sitting on that bike for long stretches at a time, so if it doesn't fit well you will be in pain.  Over time, an ill fitting road bike can lead to unnecsary wear and tear on your body.  Again, Giant Bicycles will offer you good value for good quality.

THE COMMUTER/TOURING/HYBRID BIKE
Most people fit into this category when looking for a bike.  This is the all purpose bike with a geometry somewhere between the road and mountain bike.  It will take you to work, the grocery store, on a breeze through the park, on the road for a little excercise, or on a bike tour of Italy.  The custom built Rivendell Atlantis is king of this category.  However, if you will be parking your bike on the street, then consider getting a cheap and UGLY commuter - it is not likely to be stolen.  In this case, a used bike often offers decent quality with a reduced price tag.  I know many people who have an ugly/cheap commuter for work/school, and a swanky bike for everything else.

THE SINGLE SPEED
Just like the name implies, this bike has only one gear (you get to choose the gear) - no changing to an easier gear when you encounter a hill.  A single speed is not just a kind of bike, it is a life style.  In mountain biking, the single speeders are the most hard core and excellent technical riders.  Out on the street, a single speed bike is hip and trendy.  It's great for an extra challenge on your morning commute, and maintenance is a breeze.  For an everyday single speed, I love the Bianchi San Jose.  I quite enjoyed cruising one of these everytime I house-sat for a mountain biking friend, with his blessing, of course.

A BIKE FOR YOUR TYKE
If you are looking to buy some lucky tyke their first wheels, then look no further than a balance bike.  This one by Skuut looks funny, has no pedals, and is wooden, but it will teach a child how to ride a bike without the need for training wheels.   This bike teaches the child how to balance on two wheels.  They start out walking on either side of the bike, but as they get more confident, they will start pushing off with both feet and gliding - this is a natural progression because even little tykes want to go fast!  Once they perfect the balance bike, a kid has no problem with a regular two wheeler, because pedaling is the easy part.

And no matter what bike you choose - PROTECT YOUR NOGGIN AND WEAR A HELMET!

A COUPLE OF NOTES:

WOMEN SPECIFIC BIKES
Most manufacturers now make women specifc bikes. These optimize the bike's geometry for women, who tend to have longer legs and shorter torsos than men. Women specific bikes are the way to go if you are petite. If you are taller, go by fit. I am 5'10'' and I ride a men's frame. Women's bikes do often come in more pastel colors, which is controvesial. Some girls say that they hate pinks and pastels, and want 'normal' colored bikes just like the boys have. I think pink bikes are awesome - especially if the lady on it is a badass!

CHOOSING A BIKE SHOP
I recommend that you research your bike options online, and then buy your bike at a local bike store. Find a shop that has a good reputation, and carries the type of bikes and the brands you're intersted in. You may have to shop around to test drive different brands. Keep in mind that the shop can swap out parts on the bike before you buy it so that it fits you better or suits your local terrain. Though this may carry an extra charge, it will be cheaper than replacing those parts yourself. When you buy your bike at a reputable shop, they will remember you and build a relationship with you. This means that they may offer you discounts, and they may even do simple repairs/installs for free. So choosing a bike shop is much like dating - can you see yourself in a long term relationship? I choose on the basis of the brands they offer, their offerings in the chick section, and the vibe - no snooty bike shop need apply.

Wishful Wednesday ...

It's time for ...

... again ladies (and my Mister).  And today's topic IS ...

I 'WISH' .... I had the willpower to stay on one particular diet, and it would be the ALMOST carb-less diet I was AWESOME about being on up until my wedding!

... and then I promptly went on my honeymoon and ate my weight in bread gained 20 lbs a little bit due to depriving myself for the past 4 years such a long time.  This "diet" is what achieved me being in this shape ...

{Disclaimer:  Please don't comment "Oh you looked SO good!" or "Man you used to be so skinny!" or "Wow that doesn't look like you."  Because I will hunt you down and hurt you.  I know I used to be "so skinny".  No need to rub it in.  Schanks.}

{mini-me in the middle at my bachelorette party in Vegas}

{mini-me at my lingerie shower given to me by my bridesmaids}

{mini-me opening presents at my lingerie shower}

And mind you, all these pictures were taken BEFORE I went on my psychotic, drill sargeantesque "it's 1 1/2 weeks before my wedding, I want to be even SKINNER" diet and lost 12 lbs.  Yes, you read that right 12 LBS in a week and a half.  And yes, I ate.  Low carb EVERYTHING and ran 2 miles every night.  Crazy.  CRAZY I tell you!  But hey, it worked.  And like I said, I may or may NOT have gained those 12 lbs back on my honeymoon.  HELLO free breakfast buffet.  Carb LOAD.  Except I wasn't training for any sort of marathon.  More like a carb-a-thon.

SO what diet do you wish YOU had the willpower to stay on?  Head over to Kelsey's darling little blog, grab her button, do a little posty-postin' of your own and go back and tell her about it!  Mmmmmk?

Happy Wednesday loves, the week's half over!!!

New To Makeup Series: Makeup Brushes - Eye

Getting good makeup brushes made the biggest improvement to the quality of my makeup application.  In this post I review my favorite eye makeup brushes, and mention a few misses.  Although I like many of these brushes, I don't think it's necessary to buy all of these brushes at once.  One from each category is sufficient to get you started.   Also, it's best to buy brushes as you need them for specific techniques or looks.

For more of my thoughts on makeup brushes in general and an overview of my favorite face brushes check out the face brush post.  You don't need to buy the EXACT brushes I mention here - the shape is what's important.
In this picture, I have arranged the brushe in order of preference for each section, so if I had to buy only one brush from each section, then the one I listed first would be it.

FLAT SHADER BRUSHES
Flat shader brushes are used to apply color to the lid.  A good shader brush will hold a lot of shadow and apply that shadow evenly across the lid. The MAC 239 is hands down the best shader brush I have ever used.  It is great at packing on color to the eye lid, because it not only holds a good amount of shadow at one time, it also is just the right size to fit the lid with precision.  For more precise color application, I really like the MAC 228.  It is a teeny shader that is great at applying color to just a portion of the lid, or to the bottom lashes.  For loose pigments, I find a brush with some synthetic bristles cuts down on the amount of fallout.  So for loose pigments, I really like the MAC 242.  I also like the 242 for cream shadows and even concealer.  The MAC 252 is a larger sibling of the 242.  I find it too big for anything, and don't use it very much.

BLENDING BRUSHES
Blending brushes are used to blend edges of the shadow, and to blend between colors.  The MAC 217 is the best blending brush I own.  In fact, if I had to choose only one eye brush, I would choose the 217.  It is just stiff enough to be effective, but still fluffy enough to be a great blender.  Because it's slightly flat and slightly tapered, it is also quite good at applying color to the entire lid.  I also use the 217 to sweep a mid-tone color into the crease.  For blending the highlight shaow to the crease color, there is nothing better than the MAC 227.  This dense brush looks really big and clumsy, but it is a champion blender.  It is also good at sweeping color onto the lid, or onto the whole eye area.  And as a bonus, the 227 is big enough to be used to apply highlight to the cheekbone.  The MAC 226 is a great brush for more detailed crease work. Its fine tip allows for a more defined crease color application and for application of color more precisely into the outer corner.  Finally, when it comes to blending eye shadow, the MAC 224 is absolute rubbish.  The 224 too big, too flat on top, and too soft.  Stick to blending out concealer with this one.

EYE LINER/BROW BRUSHES
My favorite brush for gel eyeliner application is the Sonia Kashuk bent eye liner brush.  It is just the right thickness and the angle allows easier application of the liner.  For a more precise or finer line, I like the MAC 210.  The MAC 209 is also a good liner brush, but gives a thicker line.  For brows, I like the MAC 208.  It is smaller and stiffer than the MAC 266.  I also use both the 208 and the 266 to apply shadow over my gel liner to set it, and to make it more blended and less severe.

SPECIALTY EYE BRUSHES
There are several brushes that I use reglarly that do not fit into any of the above categories.  My favorite of these specialty brushes is the MAC 205.  The 205 is intended to apply mascara, but I use it to declump my mascara once it's applied.  The bristles are short, stiff and fine, so they work themselves between lashes perfectly, separating them and rmoving any clumps.  I also often reach for the MAC 219 pencil brush, using it to apply shadow to the lower lashes, into the inner corner, to just the arch of my brow, and to the outer corner.  In short, this brush offers the utmost precision, wherever it is needed.  The MAC 214 s great at smoking out eye liner, applying shadow over gel eye liner, an applying shadow to the lower lahes.  Finally, I often reach for my spoolie brush for combing out my brows or lashes.  The one I have is from Anastasia of Beverly Hills - I got it in a brow kit.  However, for the longest time I used a mascra wand that I washed after the mascara was done, and it worked just as well.

That's it for brushes.  Don't forget to clean your brushes regularly - check out my brush cleaning tutorial.  Which are your favorites?  Which do you regret buying?

Temptation Tuesday!

Time for my eversodarling Soulmatey's alliteration blog day ...

And today this little guy is calling my name ...

{mummm, i's dun't no WHY you's takin' mah picktuh, i is NOT sweepy!}

{i is NOT sweepy, i is NOT sweepy ...}

{is is NOT sw ... zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz}

And really it's not my big love-of-a-labrador that's tempting me (okay, I'm lying, he's always a temptation, who wouldn't want to rub those big floppy ears!??!) but it's his lazy demeanor and the fact that he gets to sleep. all. day. that's tempting me.  Which now leads my temptation to ...

That's right.  Beds.  And bedding.  Luxious beds that I'd give my first born child right arm to be snoozing in RIGHT now on this dreary Tuesday in Dallas.  So let's torture myself some more, shall we?

{this one is my FAV}

And now let's move on to the creme de la creme.  How about a little Neiman's bedding?  We might as well, as long as I'm already toturing myself.

{FAVORITE Neiman's bedding ...}

Now granted, most of these would only work in a house that was a borderline chateau, but still one must always acknowledge the beauty that is Neiman's.  Even if I wouldn't pay for it unless someone was holding a gun to my head my life depended on it.  Sigh.  Now doesn't that make you all just want to go home and jump in bed?  I know it does me.  Even more so that I already wanted to.  What's tempting YOU on this Temptation Tuesday?  Head on over to my Soulmatey's blog, grab her button and tell us about it.  Mmmmmk?

Happy Temptation Tuesday friends!  I'm going to go dream some more about, well dreaming.

OH and P dittle S, HEWWO to my new readers!  I am SO happy to have you!  If I haven't dropped by your blog to say hello yet, rest assured I will!

The Food Pod?

Sometimes I look at my kitchen and think - why do I have all these gadgets?  Then I look at a new gadget, and thind - oh man, I need that!

I first saw the food pod in a magazine a couple of weeks ago.  I was somewhat intrigued, but not nearly enough to run out and get one.  It's a silicone contraption that you put your food in before you put it in a pot to boil.  It allows you to easily pull out your food out of the hot water without the need for additional straining.  It's $15 from Fusionbrands.

This weekend, while we were boiling all of those eggs for christmas, I couldn't help but think how much easier it would be with the food pod.  Stuff the eggs in the pod, and drop into water.  No broken eggs.  And the first eggs in the pot wouldn't be overcooked.  I could also use it for veggies, potatoes, and anything else that we boil.  The possibilities are endless.

Apparently it fits about a dozen eggs...
So now I'm thinking I need a food pod.  What say ye?

Monday Schmonday ...

Seriously.  I think the Monday after a Sunday holiday should be a REQUIRED day off.  Can I get an amen here sisters?  I don't know about y'all, but our Easters include a lot of driving around and hob-knobbing with the relatives (and don't get me wrong, I love) which for SOME reason makes. me. EXHAUSTED.  If chitty chatting was an Olympic sport I'd gold medal in it on Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas for reals.  Anyways, now really, if we don't get Good Friday off I think we should AT LEAST get the Monday after Easter off.  What happened to the good ol' days of elementary school where you got BOTH days off???  So all that whining's to say.  I'm sweepy.  Especially having this cute little love smash a confetti Easter egg in my hair.  She looks so innocent doesn't she?  She's lucky she's so cute.  And that she's my sister.

{No that's not this weekend, that was last summer when I was oh-so-tan}

Did everyone have a Happy Easter?  I by the grace of God after longer shopping that anyone should ever be forced to do FINALLY found an Easter dress that was both comfortable AND cute.  Which, of course, I don't have a picture of.  But I DO, however, have a picture of my adorable wedges that I got to go WITH the Easter dress (yes, my Easter dress had black in it, no I wasn't in mourning, yes I realize you're supposed to dress in all pastels on Easter, no I don't care)

Aren't they SUPER DUPER cute???  And I wasn't even taller than my mister, even though the heel does look about 6 inches high.  I'm pretty sure it was only 3 1/2, MAYBE 4.  And I DID snap a pic of my necklace.  I know.  Black again.  At least it's flowers, that's Eastery right?  I promise my dress had bright pops of floral color ALL over it.

Which brings me to my next point, that point being that I am OBSESSED with these cloth flower and ribbon necklaces!!!  Here are a few of my fav's.  If any of you feel the need to buy and send me these, you just gorightahead.

I just LOVE how flirty and girly they are.  Hearty heart heart HEART!!!

Now, in other other news.  Sweet miss Aly over at AnALYze This left me this sweet award.  Thanks sweet girl!!!  If you haven't checked out her blog you should because she's a doll.

And that's all from this blogger for today loves.  I hope y'all had a fantastic Easter weekend.  Here's to this week FLYING by!!!
